Fear of Clowns – What is Coulrophobia?
The fear of clowns, otherwise known as coulrophobia is actually quite common and many people suffer from this phobia to different degrees, it’s a fear that has been on the increase in recent decades. Scientists, psychologists and doctors all agree that it is a result of not knowing who lies behind the excessive and strange makeup, a red nose, bright hair colours and colourful lurid clothing that will cause the fear of the clown.
Clowns wear colourful makeup and clothing to deconstruct the facial features to create a new identity or persona. When dressed as a clown, the person will break social norms, their mask makes them able to do things that others can’t do socially, like interacting with unknown people at ease.
Now obviously clowns are seem for many as entertaining and circuses and parties are fun for the majority – however if you or your child is currently scared then it would surely be better not to be!
This phobia will have a root cause and the fear can be relieved, making the fear go and for the individual to be able to join in in activities and fun.

Some researchers believe that coulrophobia cases increased after the 90’s, when Steven Spielberg classic horror film “IT” depicting a murderous clown was released. Another popular increase is believed to be around the portrayal of Joker as an evil character in Batman movies, and especially the more recent portrayals. There are also many clown memes around now.
As with any phobia it can cause a state of panic, difficulty in breathing, irregular heartbeat, sweating, nausea and feelings of fear.
Coulrophobia may seem absurd for some, however it is as ‘real’ as any other fear and should be treated as so – the are many other phobias which people can’t understand; and even with the more common ones, certain people can’t understand why some people are scared of flying, or spiders or of hospital treatments – but many people are. The phobia of clowns is no different.
It can be the thoughts of going somewhere such as a circus or a party which van trigger someone, of the thoughts of eating at a well-known fast food establishment, clowns are used in hospitals as decoration to ease younger children – which doesn’t always help.
It is said that the phobia develops in early years, when children are very sensible to an unfamiliar face in a familiar body. There isn’t any official data about how many people suffer from coulrophobia, although it is believed that it is much more prevalent in western society (where exposure to clowns is more prevalent since a younger age). Some estimate that around 13% of adults in the UK suffer from it, and between 17-23% of children.

What is a phobia?
A phobia is a persistent, irrational fear of, and a desire to avoid, certain object/s, animals, events or situations. It is considered by mainstream psychology that the only 2 fears that we are all born with are of sudden loud noises and of height, any fear of heights is actually a fear of falling.
Other people consider that you are not born with a phobia – and that it’s a learned response. A learned response which has by situations in the past, of which almost always have a root cause, which you then react to when confronted by the phobic stimulus. With phobias even the anticipation, of thoughts or by thinking of the situation will often be enough to provoke the reaction. The person will then experience feelings, reaction and responses of anxiety, fear, panic and panic attacks.
