HYPNOTHERAPY AND NLP HELPING WITH ARACHNOPHOBIA – THE FEAR AND PHOBIA OF SPIDERS
The fear of spiders or as it is commonly known arachnophobia is an extremely common phobia and affects a large amount of the population to some degree. Some will be able to stamp on them, hoover them up or cover them with something; others will get someone else to get rid of it.
However for some it can be so debilitating that just hearing the word can cause absolute fear and such a phobic reaction that they can either become almost frozen paralysed or flee in complete panic, screaming and shouting. Some people will need to go to another place until someone else gets home to deal with it, or get a neighbour to come around to get rid of that spider. Of course they (spiders) do move and this doesn’t always help if they’ve moved as this can lead to more anxiety about where it is now!
Some people can ‘deal’ with the little spiders; it’s normally when it’s a ‘real’ spider that the fear can kick in. These are the ones that look like spiders! Rationally this doesn’t really make sense but it does seem real to individuals who suffer from a spider phobia.
As with most phobias this will have a reason or root cause and getting to that root is where I would aim this treatment at, from then onwards it is about dealing with the here and now. So basically changing your reaction, thoughts and feelings about them so that you will be able to notice changes.
Often people are aware of the cause more or less anyway, and it’s often that you would have had a negative experience around spiders when you were young. Usually it will be around an adult being and showing fear when you were a child, you would have then made a connection which will have caused this phobia.

What is a phobia?
A phobia is a persistent, irrational fear of, and a desire to avoid, certain object/s, animals, events or situations. It is considered by mainstream psychology that the only 2 fears that we are all born with are of sudden loud noises and of height, any fear of heights is actually a fear of falling.
Other people consider that you are not born with a phobia – and that it’s a learned response. A learned response which has by situations in the past, of which almost always have a root cause, which you then react to when confronted by the phobic stimulus. With phobias even the anticipation, of thoughts or by thinking of the situation will often be enough to provoke the reaction. The person will then experience feelings, reaction and responses of anxiety, fear, panic and panic attacks.
Using hypnotherapy, NLP, positive psychology and EFT Matthew can re-programme your thoughts, change your associations and replace them with new, more appropriate feelings, reaction, behaviours, emotions and thoughts.
If you have arachnophobia, you will probably go out of your way to ensure that you do not come into contact with a spider. If you find a spider in your home, you may react in one of two ways: either screaming and running away or freezing in place. You may be unable to kill or trap the spider yourself, relying on a friend or family member to rescue you from the situation. If you are alone, you may actually leave the house rather than deal with the spider.
Eventually, you may find yourself limiting your activities in an effort to avoid spiders. Hiking and camping trips may be difficult or impossible for you. You may even dread visiting the zoo or participating in sports that involve being outside in a field.
The alternative view is that the dangers, such as from spiders, are overrated and not sufficient to influence evolution. Instead, inheriting phobias would have restrictive and debilitating effects upon survival, rather than being an aid. For some communities such as in Papua New Guinea and Cambodia spiders are included in traditional foods. This suggests arachnophobia may be a cultural, rather than genetic trait.
